Job Search Advice
We asked the human resources directors at some of the Best Christian Workplaces to tell us what they were looking for in new hires and this is what they told us:
Qualities that we look for:
- Demonstrated walk with God, and in particular an understanding and a passion for the mission of the organization. This will come out in the interview, but can be highlighted in the cover letter.
- Demonstrated professional competence in the area for which we are hiring, or in the case of entry level candidate, the right background and education. This should be clear from the resume.
In an interview:
- An understanding that we have high job standards and that we want people who are committed to quality work. We don’t want people who believe that a Christian culture is that we are nice and do not have high expectations of our employees. (We want to weed out anyone who thinks that we should not terminate employment for those who are not capable of doing the work after we have given them every reasonable opportunity by provding training, coaching and tools).
- A demonstrated ability to deal with conflict in a healthy manner. Some candidates may believe that a Christian work environment should be conflict free, rather than seeing healthy conflict as a necessary and ingredient to building teams and getting people to work well together.
